Types of Tension Members

  • Wires and cable: 

Wire rope are exclusively used for hosting purposes and as guy wire in steel stacks and towers. Stands and ropes are formed by helical winding of wires.

Cables are used as floor suspenders in suspension bridges are made from individual strands wound together in rope like fashion.

  • Bars and Rods: 

These are one of the simplest from of tension members. Bars and rods are often used as tension members in bracing system, as sag rods to support purl ins between trusses.

  • Plates and Flat Bars: 

Plate and flat bars are often used as tension members in transmission towers, foot bridges etc. These are also used in columns to keep the components members in their correct position e.g. lacing flats, batten plates, end tie plates etc.
