Define factor of safety

The factor of safety is defined as the factor by which the yield stress of the material is divided to give the working stress (permissible stress) in the material. A greater value of factor safety used to be adopted formally and as such the working stress computed were small. As a result of this, a large cross-section of the member had to be adopted in design.
